The new text book, provisionally titled Spoken Hokkien, aims to support teaching and learning for a new Hokkien course. Currently there is no suitable textbook for contemporary Hokkien learning by English-speaking students. Spoken Hokkien will use a vocabulary of about 900 words, and will emphasise everyday conversation. As an outcome, students will have a basic knowledge of modern Taiwanese and be able to hold simple conversations. Vocabulary and dialogues will focus on everyday conversation. In addition, it will cover:
- pronunciation
- a romanised orthography
- grammar explanations
- practice and self-check activities
